Growing up in St. Louis, I spent many memorable moments exploring Shaw Nature Reserve. The love of the place brought me back there as an adult and horticulturist - to work and share with others the possibilities of native landscaping and the joy of natural areas.
In the beginning there was the land. The property was purchased by Missouri Botanical Garden in 1925 in order to relocate the living plant collections, especially the orchids, due to heavy smog in St. Louis during the coal burning days of the early 1900’s.
Shaw Nature Reserve (SNR) is located just 35 miles southwest of downtown St Louis and represents an excellent example of many habitats. Prairies, woodlands, wetlands and glades provide a natural showcase of biodiversity in both flora and fauna. SNR is many things to many people.
It is a place to walk, to photograph, to go birding and botanizing. It has become a premier environmental education center providing opportunities for students of all ages and teacher training programs in outdoor education. SNR has one of the largest wildflower demonstration and
teaching gardens in the Midwest, the Whitmire Wildflower Garden.
This book covers the evolution of Shaw Nature Reserve from its early days to the present and provides an in-depth look at the development of the habitats that exist on the 2400 acre property.
Barbara Perry Lawton is a well-known, award winning Garden Writer and author of many horticultural books. It was a wonderful experience to collaborate with her on this project.
